Let us introduce you to Freak Slug, the creative project of Manchester-based artist Xenya Genovese. She has officially announced her debut album ‘I Blow Out Big Candles’, set for release on November 8 via Future Classic. Together with the album announcement she also unveils the record’s first single ‘Spells’.

New single ‘Spells’ perfectly captures Freak Slug’s fearless and experimental edge. Blending a slinking bass line with twitchy electronics. The album was recorded between Manchester and London with Alex Headford (Jadu Heart / Gretel) and promises a playful yet introspective journey. This debut album also marks a new chapter for Freak Slug, who has been steadily building a fanbase with her earlier EPs like ‘I’m In Love’ and ‘Viva La Vulva’. While her previous releases leaned toward a more upbeat, summery vibe, ‘I Blow Out Big Candles’ delves deeper into darker, rawer emotions, heavily influenced by ‘90s icons like Mazzy Star and Ride.

About the new single she says:

Spells is a track I made with Alex from Jadu Heart and it’s the first song we ever made together on the album. We worked fast together in a hyper environment where the sun was shining through the windows and I was stealing his cigarettes smoking in the garden in excitement from making the song.

Spells‘ is out now on all platforms via Future Classic. You can pre-save ‘I Blow Out Big Candles’ here.
