Jane Penny, whom you might know from TOPS, is today announcing her debut solo EP ‘Surfacing’. Together with the exciting announcement she also unveils the EP’s lead single ‘Messages’.

Jane Penny’s solo debut ‘Surfacing’ was written, produced and recorder by Penny between Berlin and Montreal and started working on it right after TOPS’ European tour back in March 2020. We’re happy to see these songs are finally seeing the light of day and we’re extremely excited to hear more from this talented musician. New single ‘Messages’ beautifully captures the best elements of TOPS’ signature style, yet it possesses a unique quality that sets it apart, marking an impressive introduction to the artist’s solo journey. It’s a dreamy and delicious slice of indie pop and we can’t get enough of it! About the new song she says:

“It’s a pop song about getting notifications from everyone except the one person you want to hear from, which was happening to me at the time,” Penny said in a statement. “The opening sample — ‘there is a message for you’ is a strange message that the credit card machines in Montreal cabs make.”

The beautiful music video was directed by Otium and is inspired by Maya Deren’s 1943 film Meshes Of The Afternoon.

“The concept came from a meditation on the journey which led me to have a solo project, a journey which involved searching for myself, striving for some true essence, and realizing that this will naturally happen and isn’t something I need to force.”

Messages‘ is out now on all platforms. ‘Surfacing‘ arrives April 5th via Luminelle Recordings.
