Belgian artist Bolis Pupul, famed for his brilliant 2022 collaboration with Charlotte Adigéry, is gearing up for the release of his debut solo album ‘Letter to Yu’ set to drop on March 8 via Soulwax’s Deewee label. As a first taste he’s sharing today the record’s lead single ‘Completely Half’, which comes with a stunning music vdieo set in Hong Kong.
We were blown away by Bolis and Charlotte’s ‘Topical Dancer’ and witnessing their live performance turned us into enthusiastic fans of both these unique and talented artists. Consequently, we are thrilled that Bolis Pupul is revealing another facet of himself through a solo project. The new single, ‘Completely Half’ presents a mesmerizing slice of synthpop that comes to life beautifully in a stunning music video shot in Hong Kong. Directed by Bieke Depoorter, the video and the upcoming record serve as a touching homage to Bolis Pupul’s late Hong Kong-born mother. It unfolds as a heartfelt narrative about Pupul’s journey to Hong Kong. ‘Completely Half’ is a delicious slice of electronic pop, complete with a chorus that slowly creeps up on you. Speaking about the new music, Bolis says:
“When I started to think about my roots, I started to embrace them. And it became more and more important for me to get in touch with them. I went to evening school and began learning Chinese. I did that for four years. That was the first step.
The album was also inspired by his first visit to Hong Kong in 2018.
“On the first day I arrived in the city I visited the street where she was born and wrote her a letter. This letter became the centerpiece of my record. Letter To Yu is an homage to my mother, my grandparents and Hong Kong.”
‘Completely Half’ is out now on all platforms. ‘Letter To Yu‘ arrives March 8th via Deewee.
